What sounds more like "My"? Mai or Mie?

Everyone is saying Mai. But I thought that when ai are put together it makes an ey sound like in maid. So wouldn't Mai be pronounced May? And since Mie looks like Pie and Lie, which has that i sound like in my, then isn't that a better choice? What to you think?
